Dazed QMGS Opener
Today, after months of work, the QMGS had their first event. We had a lot that was unexpected and I want to use this time to reflect. Dazed QMGS opener.
‘In the moment, you go with the flow and hope all your hard work takes form. Afterwards, you take a step back and evaluate how you did. That’s how you grow.’
I’m still somewhat unsure of how today’s event went.
I know it was a huge and unexpected turnout, but the sentiment of those who attended I’m unsure about.
I want to take some time to reflect before starting tomorrow.
It’s important for me, to see what I could’ve done better and what I could do to improve. But also to congratulate the points that went well.
I don’t try to worry about others opinions too much but when you’re at the helm of an organisation, it’s hard to not consider all the voices.
Everyone has a stake. I’m just a figurehead that tries to organise ideas.
To start the day, I took the committee aside and we had a meeting.
We spoke about our plans, I ran through a training exercise I recently took part in and I asked if they had anything to share.
It was cool to hang out and discuss before the madness took form.
We helped with the Treasure Hunt event held by the School of Geography.
I took a lead to get people to put their names on labels and interact with others.
I could’ve prepared better for my speech and mentioned the core values, but in the moment looking down at all these new faces I went blank.
I highlighted the importance of buying membership and we do serve them with our work.
I think that went as well as it could’ve done.
Next I could’ve taken a little break but I feel the need to help people so I didn’t sit down.
We soon realised that the pizza party was going to have to start earlier than expected and we were going to need more pizza.
With a limited budget already, it was seeming difficult to pull at the purse strings.
Kendra, the treasurer, has told me we still have money although it is significantly less than what we had thought.
Although we did still run out of pizza, and I didn’t have any, it was a successful day.
Over 75 people attended the pizza party which is significantly more than what we thought.
Social media was strong and I think we did a good job of managing people.
Sometimes you can’t help everyone and trying to please everyone just ends in disaster.
I’m happy we succeeded and we can learn from this moving forward.
I’m still tired with an early start tomorrow.
But hoping to get a good night’s rest, although I am doing so already.
I’m proud. Slightly unsure with number of memberships we’ll receive. Must remain optimistic.
I’m proud of my team.
I couldn’t of asked for a better team.
