Delegate Control

From a lot of the things I’ve been listening to recently, it’s all centred around control, ego and scale. If you want to scale you must delegate control.

Me at The Borderline in Tottenham Court Road, London, UK

‘Let go of the dammed ego if you want to succeed, but be careful who you trust. It’s a tricky world out there.’

I mainly use this visual because it resembles someone who has clearly lost mental control, or they’re a massive fanboy.

I’d like to associate with the latter but I’m sure others will push for the former.

It also symbolises the state of many people after the QMGS Pub Crawl tonight.

I snuck out early and lugged my tired self home to write the blog and more importantly to sleep.

So yes, I do have my headphones in and my water bottle by my side and all is well.

I’m fighting sleep but I want to make this quick blog worthwhile for myself and others.

Losing control isn’t a good thing.

But delegating, now that is a skill for the ages.

If you ever start something on your own, eventually you’re going to need to find people who know things better than you.

They know how to perform skills better than you.

You need to give them control.

Oftentimes we get bogged down in the admin to actually work on anything meaningful.

The mission for ‘inbox zero’ cripples any short term progress and potentially any long term success.

But we all feel the need to crunch through and have no emails.

It’s so satisfying isn’t it?

I’ve learnt, the hard way, to delegate tasks to others.

I can’t and I shouldn’t do everything.

I’ll go insane and even more so that I look like I have done in that photo.

The problem is this little thing called time.

We think that others will do it slower and worse.

But the beauty of the human spirit is that we should often expect the unexpected from others.

Members of the committee have worked harder than I ever imagined.

It surprised me, but I’m glad they’re willing to put the work in.

Ego and success doesn’t compute.

Not even in sales anymore.

Anyone can be sold anything, they say.

But it comes down to applying the knowledge to personal experiences.

And selling personally to people because no-one wants to be classed as the same.

And people will let you down, that’s a given.

But if you rest all your eggs in one basket, you risk failing it all yourself.

I don’t think its possible to be one or the other but to succeed, you have to find that happy medium.

Tonight was fun, but I’m very tired from organising people and need some sleep.

Delegating control isn’t easy but its necessary to allow others to succeed as much as yourself.

I want to empower others so that they tell me what to do, rather than the other way round.

They must become better themselves without me dragging them along.

A mistake I made before thinking that my success was the be all and end all.

It’s a collaborative effort but they must make the time to develop themselves.
