FSYH: Fancy Seeing You Here

Good or bad, seeing people you shared memories with often causes reflection and appreciation.

Everyday, I will attempt to create a professional, articulate, hilarious and modern take on my day of thought or action. Inspired by Casey Neistat who created a vlog everyday for 450 straight days. I will call it: 365MeThoughts

To find the acronyms that are at the top, go to my Instagram pageeveryday and see what the images are and see if you can figure it out…

Yes, I just returned from study abroad. Yes, I mentioned it yesterday. No, it won’t be a recurring theme. Yes, I like these types of sentences. No, I won’t stop. No, I won’t change.

It’s been 5 months since I saw some of my friends. I make friends my family in the absence and yearning of extended family in the same continent. Austin invited the challenges to find ‘my people’, I succeeded to some degree. More time would’ve tested those relationships but while the my time was short, the memories were fruitful.

Ollie at Nandos in Kent, UK

Ollie (pictured above) was the first friend I met after being away, on my own adventure, for 5 months. We’re best mates and have been through a lot. It was strange to see him but it felt like I hadn’t left. That’s a feeling that was reciprocated with many of my other close friends. I came to the conclusion that because WhatsApp, Snapchat and Instagram keeps us all so well connected — we never feel separated from our respective homelands.

While it felt awkwardly familiar to be amongst rolling green hills, numerous speeding hatchbacks and grumpy Brits; I didn’t feel like I had a place. Austin was my second home, London was supposed to be my first.

I felt lost, confused and misrepresented. My values were the same, my heart was split and my loyalties skewed.

It was only when I sat back in my old, black chair and turned on my Ikea lamp that I felt at home.

The reason for today’s topic is that I saw George (pictured first) at his workplace today. I surprised him. He didn’t seem best impressed with his headset on, talking as if he was some sort of TV producer. Truth be told, I had seen him in Los Angeles in November along with two other friends (maybe an edition in the blog on that in the future), so the emotions weren’t as forceful. The moment was slightly ruined by the arrogant woman behind me who gave me an earful (yes only one earful because the only one she had an earphone imitating a crappy football commentator with a low budget) about cutting in front of her. Guess I was back in the UK after all… goodbye Southern hospitality.

I’m glad I went and I look forward to more memories in the future. Maybe at my workplace, oh wait… I quit my job. Another day, another blog.

Zeke (left) and I in Austin, TX

I’m waiting for the time where I meet with my friends from Austin, that will be surreal and unbelievable. Zeke (pictured above), well we met in a strange and rather embarrassing (on my side) situation. We shared a class together which was extremely academic and most went straight over my head. Given that introduction, I was daydreaming one day and stared towards his computer screen. I saw on two or three tabs that he had QMUL-related websites there. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I asked him after class the reason for that and he told me that he (and his girlfriend Leah) was studying abroad there in Spring 2018.

WOW, I was astonished. I met another me. ANOTHER ME! Although he didn’t look like me, he was ME!

We became best friends and lived happily ever after… children stories aren’t real kids. But in all seriousness, we became close, did brunch and I shared my knowledge with him.

I guess the moral of the story is: just be forward and ask questions you might be embarrassed about. Zeke and I talk about it all the time, had I not asked we wouldn’t have become great friends.

I really don’t know what these blogs will become, but I hope they serve as a reminder to always be myself and never apologise for that.
