Today marks the 31st December 2016. The last day of a rollercoaster year, to say the least. Amazingly, I think I’m ready to face the new year, for once. Surprisingly, I feel like 2017 will bring even more joy that 2016. I look forward to the challenge of Texas and whatever the journalism path takes me.
Today… well what did I do? There were no formal NYE celebrations, but we’ll come to that.
Firstly, I was taken by my cousin to the local mall, the best in town. Dolmen Mall, to be exact. Yes, it’s the best in the city. It was nice to be fair. Can’t complain. With an in-built arcade called Sindbad, I beat my cousin’s husband at air hockey with the score of 2–1. Perfect. Dominance proclaimed. After buying a new shirt with equivalent price of £12, Primark prices at decent outlets is just what Pakistan does for the British purse.
After the mall, I came home and crashed. Completely. Like never before. Before I had a chance to crash though, there was a matter of family photos to attend to. I had so much fun, framing pictures from every angle. It was amazing to have everyone together.
The evening brought two types of celebrations. My other cousin’s birthday falls on this 31st December, so there was an extravagant dinner, with the best chef in town giving up his new year’s celebrations to cater to us. I loved it. All the family was there. Well… meanwhile my dad was en-route to the airport to pick up my cousin from the USA. It was a miracle of a journey. I’m so glad it all worked out. She’s here now. Glowing more than ever. Emirates nearly ruined our day. Miracles do happen. Trust me.
Back to the birthday/ NYE celebrations… the journey to the party was eventful. The Karachi government has a way about them, that they kind of have no logic to thought. They decided it would be a good idea to put containers to block the entrances to arterial pathways. So, to prevent people getting to the beach and causing havoc. Makes sense, right? But… oh no, I never imagined what they actually did. They thought that let’s put two containers to the entrance of a road, but let’s not block the off-road track nearby. The daredevils that my family strives to be, promptly decided that taking the off-road track was the best option. Unfortunately, that road took us to the direction of cars facing us. I couldn’t bare to look. Luckily, I lived to tell the story.
(Sorry if that reads badly, I’m tired, typing this at 1:28am in 2017)
When we got back to the house, 2017 nearly had arrived. We knew when it had however, there was absolute hellfire among the streets of Karachi. Live gun bullets broke loose. It was quite horrifying actually. More so because my dad was still on the road, on the way back from the airport. Fortunately, everything is well now and all the family is safe.
Like I said, I’m tired so till later today
I’m out
