Hello Jet Lag
Waking up at 4 am after being awake for over 24 hours isn’t pleasant. Far from it. It’s my first full day here and I’m already jam-packed, mentally anyway.
‘“I’ll do work on the plane”— famous last words’
Sending emails is difficult.
Especially when you’re juggling a change in timezone and battling sleep deprivation.
I’ll keep this blog short once again as I have to go to my interview for my research in 10 minutes.
Cutting fine — I know.
I wanted to touch on some things before I started my research.
I’m exploring urban identity of Fort Worth, TX.
There is little writing on the city.
Academia-wise — it’s a hole in the market.
I wanted to call my dissertation “Urban Holes” but it was a bit too provocative and judgemental.
So, here I am — able to judge the city in all its glory.
I’m about the head out into the city for the first time on my own.
I’m excited (wary of the heat) but slightly apprehensive.
I’ve not done research like this before.
It’s normally desk-based and faceless.
I have a responsibility to uphold the integrity of myself and the university during my trips.
I am booking an increasing amount of interviews across town with multiple stakeholders.
I’m not sure if I’ll gather enough data.
That’s a worry.
Secondly, I’m not sure if I’m collecting it in the right way.
I’ve got my consent forms in order, but I think this doubt is all part of the process.
My first interview is with the Fort Worth Business Press which bridges the gap between two of my categories: business and media.
I hope to pick the general manager’s brain on multiple issues.
I’ve got twenty minutes to get the most information possible.
It’s the adrenaline of not being sure and also realising that time is of the essence.
Yesterday was American Independence Day.
The flight was okay, except the fact that my seat was awful.
I kept shuffling around for ten hours.
The amount of food and its quality was incredible for an airplane ride though — can’t complain.
By the time the fireworks went off, I had been up for over 24 hours.
I saw two fireworks ignite and on the third, fell sound asleep.
A 4th July to remember.
Or one to forget?
I’m happy, I’m excited.
The jet lag can exit soon though.
Trip to Houston already planned and I’m going to busy collecting data all this month.
Wish me luck.
