Over And Out Budapest

Final day in Budapest has drawn to a close. It rained. We walked round Pest with our luggage. Now we’re at the airport. Here’s what I learned overall.

Me in Heroes Square in Budapest, Hungary

Five days and four nights in Budapest, Hungary. Complete.

It’s been a relaxing holiday and an excellent chance to embrace a new culture.

Despite our poor planning on dress choice today, most of the trip went swimmingly.

A quick summary on the day and night before.

We finally made it to Szimpla Kert last night.

It’s supposedly the best ruin bar in Budapest.

It definitely lived up to the billing.

It was something like no other.

A collection of bars connected by staircases and passageways.

Nothing like Instant but a set-up that allowed people to either sit and enjoy the company of others or have a little dance about.

I enjoyed the chilled night.

All the nights out were good. I think I liked this the most.

Tesla Club was the best out-and-out club. Recommend them both.

Back to today.

We exited our Airbnb in search of some breakfast.

Alex pointed to the wrong pastry and ended up with a Jaffa Cake doughnut (without the chocolate) — it’s the best way to describe it.

It was drizzling when we left but we didn’t seem to take any notice.

We had 6.5 hours to kill before the bus to the airport.

We went to Heroes Square and then to a miniature railway museum.

Mainly to get out the rain but it provided more context of life during the Communist era.

Surprisingly insightful it must be said.

We headed on to the Hungarian Parliament.

There were buildings surrounding it which I suppose are used by government ministers.

There was a large flagpole outside the Parliament building.

There were two guards patrolling round in a circle.

Each step was in sync.

Seemed very military and a little off-putting.

Anyway we continued on and finally found some Hungarian grub.

On the last day no less, Alex was less than pleased at this late discovery.

He won’t stop going on about the goulash he had. I can concur it was very nice.

We’re now at the airport. Our flight 30 minutes delayed. And I’m writing the blog.

What have I learned from this trip then?

It’s possible to have a meaningful, insightful and enjoyable trip on the cheap.

This holiday has cost me less than £400 all-in.

It’s also possible to see the whole of Budapest in four days.

I say four because our first day was a complete and utter waste.

Forints are a difficult currency to understand.

I can switch off and enjoy myself.

It’s possible.

Away from all distractions, I had no worries.

I didn’t think about anything that would make me stressed. I went with the flow.

Perhaps I’m turning over a new leaf.
