SBGM: Spanish Body, German Mind
Life update: The car that I fantasised near the start of these blogs 16 days ago has been bought and that’s all I did today…
Everyday, I will attempt to create a professional, articulate, hilarious and modern take on my day of thought or action. Inspired by Casey Neistat who created a vlog everyday for 450 straight days. I will call it: 365MeThoughts

New year, new me. No. It’s really the same me. It’s just a different company using the old company’s engines. Volkswagen owns SEAT. SEAT is the car I bought today. The new car has a 1L engine, produces 75PS and is as silent as could be. Road tax is minimal, which comparably inflates my bank account after forking out £185 for the previous car annually. I roast that old car, but there are some things that I will never forget.
This was me, 5 months ago. I wore old clothes because the rest of my belongings were packed away, ready to ship my life 4000 miles across the Atlantic. I took this picture for two reasons:
- There was a high probability my dad was going to sell the car while I was away, there were plans to replace it before I left
- I had a feeling I would hate not driving (which I did, just ask my friends in Austin, they’ll tell you)
Remember Adam from the ‘Relaxing Is Hard’ blog, well… we always tend to reminisce about the past. Especially, when I started to drive to school.
I must admit the best thing about driving to school was driving past the old bus stop I used to frequent and laugh at the kids waiting. I suppose that was satisfaction that getting older was a good thing (in some respects).
Anyway, we went to Bluewater one lunch time and was late back not because it was a 16 mile round trip that had to be completed in 50 mins, but because we couldn’t find parking.
My friend Ollie and I discovered what supermarket made the best 3 for £1 sweets. We discovered the snakes sweets were ones to give to your worst enemy and that it is reasonably acceptable to bring a cake into class and eat it for yourself.
All in that one car. I was known by my friends as the one who knew how to drive safely but irresponsibly. What this means is that because I took them to a supermarket that did the best lunchtime deals (4 miles away), they would compliment me on the speed and efficiency whilst questioning their life choices.
My VW, the old car, had a cubby hole located about the radio. I used to put my chicken box inside there and eat and drive. Everyone else was squirting ketchup everywhere and I had greasy hands on a polished steering wheel. The combination wasn’t favourable.
SEAT is a Spanish company, owned by a German manufacturer. The life and limbo of the car lies in the hands of the trusty Germans while the physique and chassis relies heavily on the work of the Spaniards.
I knew the car I wanted was German in some way, SEAT provided that… but for a fraction of the price.
I will attempt to have a greater appreciation for this car. It’s 1 year old compared to the old car’s 15 years. Don’t mind me if the blog is about polishing the car, like I said about the kids at the bus stop, I’m moving up in the world.
But just like all new year’s resolutions, we’ll see how long that lasts…
