Soulless

Have you ever looked at someone and thought:

‘They look dead inside’

Yeah — me too.

And sometimes that’s an introspective cry for help, but other times it’s an insightful observation.

Today I found myself in Canary Wharf meeting a friend for lunch and a catch-up.

I had some time before we met and decided to do some work in a coffee shop.

I’m a people-watcher.

I think that’s why I like the idea of ethnographic research methods.

Canary Wharf is an excellent place to analyse the human condition.

Posture, body language, communicative skills, interest.

Lunchtime rings the anthem we all know too well:

They disperse for their hour of freedom.

Now if there is one thing I’ve noticed about the people who roam around at lunchtime is that they are waiting for 5pm.

I’ve know many people who really don’t enjoy their job.

And you think, ‘why does it have to be like this?’

It’s quite simple.

We’re told life is led one way, and only that way is acceptable.

Or that way is the way to unlock other things.

I’d like to believe there are other ways.

Other paths.

But I’m yet to experience it.

I don’t blame the people, I blame the rhetoric.
