Stepping Stones

A lot of talk surrounds getting to the next stage, but forgetting the past to get there. World actions don’t happen overnight. There are stepping stones.

Me at Danson Park, Bexleyheath, Kent, UK

‘I can’t count my successes nor failures on one hand. I can’t envision a future without sacrifice. I have no intention of growing up faster than I need to. But I have a duty to do. More than most.’

My end goal is far but solidified.

I have an idea, everyone does.

Mine more idealistic than others but probably not as idealistic as some.

I have no idea the right steps.

Nor all of the steps needed.

But the end goal always changes.

I explained this to a friend not so long ago:

‘The macro (the end goal) always changes. Winning the micro (everyday actions) doesn’t lead to winning the macro. You can’t depend on the success of the micro to determine the macro as the macro always changes.’

You can influence the micro, but really not the macro.

As you grow, meet new people, change; the macro changes.

That end goal you’re chasing now won’t be your end goal forever.

Because you may reach it sooner than you may think.

Or you may feel far away all the time, change to a more realistic goal.

As we get older, we change and mature.

We realise the horribleness of the world won’t change and there’s nothing we can do.

We slump into our dead-end jobs and hate our lives.

Forgetting gratitude at the front door and complaining for the sake of it.

The crap things.

Those are what make the macro even more enjoyable.

My micro events so far have been monumental, in the short term.

They may not even make a bleep in the long term.

The fact of the matter is that change affects all of us, in different ways, but it affects all of us.

And that matters because we need to see the light at the end of every tunnel.

Not just the macro tunnel.

When people look at the depths of despair, they’re usually focused on the macro tunnel.

Instead of appreciating the micro tunnels, and their incredible impact of our day-to-day lives.

We never reach the macro.

But the steps and actions we take to get there are imperative to our success.

And success is another thing.

Success is defined by us, not by others.

So if your steps and actions are meaningful to you, you’ll be successful.

If they make others happy and yourself sad, you’ll be a failure.

People-pleasing is never a route you want to follow if you’re not content with yourself.

It can lead to dark places where not many, apart from professionals, can help you out.

My stepping stones are different to yours.

So cut the comparisons.

I fail every day.

I am vocal about them, not for pity, but to save the human race from the fantasy of the things that don’t matter.
