The Little Things

The little wins. The small, seemingly-inconsequential victories and triumphs. Those are some of the most important. Today I had one of those.

Supporting women to reach their potential.

Rising hope in East London.

I introduce you to Luminary Bakery.

An incredible social mission with scrumptious cakes, brownies and cookies. Along with some specialised treats from time to time.

Remember Mim and Chance?

They were on my flight home from Budapest. I gave them a ride to their home not far from this bakery and we stayed in contact.

Mim works at the bakery. She is a profoundly-talented cake maker and wonderful human.

Chance, I think, will turn out to be an incredibly inspiring mentor for myself. He has studied similar concepts that I want to explore for my dissertation as well as being a thoughtful and considerate soul.

Luminary Bakery is a combination of their two personalities amplified.

Some words from their marketing material will add context to Luminary Bakery’s mission.

‘Our vision is to see women provided with opportunities to leave their vulnerable situations and be released into a positive future.’

‘We use baking as a tool to take women on a journey to employability.’

I managed to meet some of the women that work there. The vibe is chilled and the shop is tucked in a quiet part of the residential area. It gave me the sense that it was an incredible place to study let alone work.

Mim has found a place of work where she can be involved with social good as well as doing something she loves.

That’s special. What dreams are made of, I suppose. I’m sure it’s not all plain sailing but that’s a story for Mim to tell if there is such a rendition.

It’s hard to articulate how excited I am to work with Luminary Bakery.

The QMGS had their first meeting today. As a surprise, I bought along some treats from the bakery.

Livia, Sustainability and Social Media Officer for the next academic year said this:

“Their concept of employing females with disadvantaged backgrounds and they offer vegan alternatives too.”

Catarina, Vice-President says:

“Choosing an indulgent chocolate cake over an ethical, independent, women-led business may feel like a guilty choice. I’m glad that Luminary Bakery make it in a piece of cake. Why have one when you can have both? Their cakes inspire creativity.”

The treats were a resounding success. I feel that a partnership is on the horizon.

As the QMGS ramps up its social events and charitable mission, Luminary Bakery will be heavily involved.

I think there is an important moral to take from this.

The little things.

I didn’t expect to meet Mim nor Chance.

The situation led me to this awesome arrangement and a more fat belly.

I could have turned a blind eye and let the whole stressful journey be even worse for them.

Struggling to get home at 3am.

I could have not kept in contact afterwards.

I could have not done a lot of things in my life.

But I wouldn’t be able to sit here. Write my blog. Feel empowered, strong and useful and most important valued.

We all want things to be done quickly. The longevity of the process involves the little wins. Also the big losses.

Whilst I don’t hide from those losses and rather am quite open about it all, I think being proud of the people in your life who are actively doing something you want to strive for is massively important.

Luminary Bakery. Mim and Chance.

It’s a match made in heaven.

All thanks to the little things.
