Two Year Imprint
I got to catch up with people I last saw nearly two years ago. These people helped me to enjoy first year with responsibility. Two year imprint.
‘Uncomfortable social experiences are all the more awkward when you have a goal in mind, but when you’re there to just be there — you feel free.’
The third years that now have jobs in the big bad world.
The embodiment of my future.
Alejandro and others who helped to make first year successful.
It was a Halloween party that I didn’t have to do too much with.
I realised that now I’m not in Texas, a cowboy uniform is actually fancy dress.
Although I didn’t get to see all the people I’ve missed, it was to uncover the after life of many of them.
Social media doesn’t quite do justice to the emotion of someone’s experience.
It doesn’t promote the ups and downs.
There were some nuances that I didn’t understand at the party but it’s because I’m entering the circle again after two years.
I did see Alej back when we both worked in Canary Wharf, and he has consistently invited me to his gatherings.
I chose this one to go to because I have been very work-heavy recently.
There is a pile of work that never ends, but it’s across responsibilities.
There’s a freshness to the work I do.
But that doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t take steps back, further than just this blog.
I’ve been to two house parties in a matter of months, something quite unusual for me.
But it’s part of my promise to meet new people and experience a new environment.
I can meet people in a professional environment and network okay, but it’s the social ones that catch me out.
It’s always the trait of taking more interest in the other person and getting them to elaborate which I’ve been good on, but answering questions about myself has been harder.
I caught up with Matt, now an advertising intern, who struggled a lot through his final year of university. We spoke about mental health, travel and new experiences. It was great to spend a good deal of time talking to him.
I saw Sam, who I spoke to a lot on social media, he is doing a job now that I’m quite interested in pursuing. We talked a lot and caught up on his life which was cool, away from what I knew about social media.
I met some new faces too.
Some that I had seen in pictures but never formally met.
Lee, Shafi and Ahmed.
All QMUL alumni.
I felt a bit left out that I was still there.
But my time will come to put the hat and gown on.
Those three mentioned have incredible minds and I can see why they are friends with Alej and the others mentioned.
Timeless friendships I find are always the most rewarding.
I remember speaking to Alej all those months ago and it was like we had seen each other just last week.
It’s great because they all meant so much to me.
They were great mentors as I thought first year was hard and excruciating
They helped to put things in perspective.
I knew a lot of them through the Commuters Society which died the year they all left.
It’s unfortunate that it didn’t continue but I flew to America and the other guy, Niko, didn’t want to take it on alone — which is understandable.
It was great to see them again.
Can’t wait to see some more soon.
